Four caffeine-free iced teas, with real quantities — and the brewing method that makes the difference over ice.
Moringa iced tea is one of the easier summer habits to keep: it is naturally caffeine-free, it takes minutes to make, and a pitcher in the fridge tends to get drunk. Moringa tea is made from the leaf of the moringa tree, either cut for tea bags or milled into powder, and the leaf holds its nutrient profile through drying — 92 nutrients, 47 antioxidants and all nine essential amino acids in the whole dried leaf.
Hot-brew, then chill — or cold-brew from the start
This is the single thing worth knowing before you start. Two methods, two results:
- Hot brew and chill. Steep 2 tea bags (or 2 tsp loose leaf) in 2 cups of water at about 195°F for 4 minutes, then cool and refrigerate. Fast, and slightly more astringent — good when mint, ginger or citrus is doing the work.
- Cold brew. Put 3 tea bags (or 1 tbsp loose leaf) in 4 cups of cold water and refrigerate for 6–8 hours, or overnight. Cold water pulls fewer tannins, so the result is noticeably smoother and rounder. If your first iced moringa tasted harsh, this is the fix.
Either way, do not pour hot tea straight over ice — it dilutes into something thin. Chill it first, then ice it.
Moringa Mint Iced Tea
Serves 1 · 10 minutes plus chilling
The most refreshing of the four, and the only one that uses powder rather than brewed leaf, so it comes together immediately.
Ingredients
- 1 cup water
- ¼ cup fresh mint leaves
- 1–2 tsp moringa powder
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 2 tbsp honey, or any sweetener you like
- ¼ tsp rock salt
- 7–8 ice cubes
Directions
- Blend the mint leaves with the water until the leaves are fully broken up.
- Strain the mint water through a fine sieve.
- Whisk in the moringa powder, honey, lemon juice and salt. Whisk rather than stir — powder clumps if you rush it.
- Refrigerate 1–2 hours, or add ice and serve immediately.
Note: the pinch of salt is not optional. It rounds off the green edge of the powder and makes the mint read as sharper.
Moringa Iced Tea with Basil and Lemon
Serves 2 · 15 minutes plus cooling
Built in the glass rather than the pitcher, so it looks better than the effort involved.
Ingredients
- 2 moringa tea bags, or 2 tsp loose moringa leaf
- 2 cups water, just off the boil
- 1 lemon, sliced
- A handful of fresh basil leaves
- 2 tsp honey, or sweetener of choice
- Ice
Directions
- Steep the tea for 4–5 minutes, stir in the honey while it is still warm so it dissolves, and let it cool to room temperature.
- Layer ice, lemon slices and basil in each glass. Press the basil lightly against the glass with a spoon to release it.
- Pour the cooled tea over the top, add more lemon and basil, and serve chilled.
Moringa, Orange and Rosemary Iced Tea
Makes about 3 cups · 10 minutes plus 2 hours chilling
The most grown-up of the four — rosemary and orange zest give it an almost cocktail-like bitterness.
Ingredients
- 2 moringa tea bags, or 2 tsp loose moringa leaf
- 2 cups water, just off the boil
- ½ tbsp orange zest
- 1–2 sprigs fresh rosemary
- 1 tsp honey, or sweetener of choice
Directions
- Steep the tea for 4–5 minutes and remove the bags.
- Pour into a pitcher with the rosemary, orange zest and sweetener, and add a further cup of hot water.
- Let it infuse 10 minutes, then strain out the rosemary and zest. Leaving rosemary in longer turns it medicinal.
- Refrigerate at least 2 hours and serve chilled.
Moringa, Peach and Ginger Iced Tea
Makes about 3 cups · 10 minutes plus 2 hours chilling
Best in late summer when peaches are ripe enough to be slightly soft — underripe fruit gives you very little.
Ingredients
- 2 moringa tea bags, or 2 tsp loose moringa leaf
- 2 cups water, just off the boil
- 1 ripe peach, pitted and sliced
- 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated or thinly sliced
- 1 tsp honey, or sweetener of choice
Directions
- Steep the tea for 4–5 minutes and remove the bags.
- Add the peach, ginger and sweetener to a pitcher with the tea, plus a further cup of hot water.
- Let it infuse 15 minutes, muddling the peach gently against the side of the pitcher.
- Strain, refrigerate at least 2 hours, and serve over ice with a fresh peach slice.
Keeping and serving
Brewed moringa iced tea keeps in the fridge for up to three days in a sealed jug; after that the flavor flattens. Add fresh herbs and fruit when you pour rather than storing them in the tea, since they soften and cloud it. If you are making a pitcher for a crowd, brew it slightly stronger than you want it and let the ice do the rest.
